Project List:
Here's a list of projects on the house that I'd like to tackle, in no particular order. This includes links and information I've found to date.
- Storm Windows
The windows on the east side of the house off the atrium don't have any storms, which is a bad thing. Instead of replacing them with vinyl, I'm going to look in to buying a pile of storm windows and installing them myself after everything is repainted. The windows are 28½" by 48" from edge to edge, and we have nine that are without storms.
Thermo Press Corp - Interior storm windows.
Window Saver - Interior acoustical windows to cut down on outside road noise.
The Burch Company - Old-school storm windows, the way Grandma used to make them. A local Baltimore company, which is good for shipping considerations.
Update: Lowe's has premade storm windows at 28" x 48" for $33. They just about fit, and for that price, work just fine.
| 1 storm window, below combined dimensions of 100" | $33/ea |
- Attic Insulation/windows
The attic has some kind of old fiberglas insulation which may or may not have been installed correctly, and there is no mention of R-value. The two windows upstairs have no storms, and the west window features a cobbled-together casement with an ancient air conditioner, which means replacement of the entire window will most likely be in order.
Update: Lowe's also has premade storm windows in a standard size for these as well.
| 1 vinyl window, below combined dimensions of 100" | $215.95/ea |

Our attic joists are spaced 22" apart, a sort-of nonstandard width. The attic measures 32' long and the peak is 14' on each side, and Dr. Math sez we have around 18 joists (I didn't get in there to look this morning.) The Owens-Corning site claims we should have R-49 up there. Dr. Math also sez I should buy twelve rolls. Lowes has R25 23x26'5" Roll
faced insulation for $27.82/ea. So we'd be looking at least about $300 for materials.
The two attic windows are 38¼" by 24¼" and I'd most likely just buy vinyl and be done with it- nothing is more annoying than having to re-glaze windows three stories off the ground.
- Replacing the Basement windows with glass block or vinyl
Glass Block of Baltimore 800-659-0175
| 2 windows are 36¼" X 27¼" (back wall) | $200/ea |
| 1 window is 36" X 26" (over the washer) | $200 |
| 2 windows are 46" X 27" (under the porch and in the Hole) | $280 |
- Sealing the basement with hydraulic cement and Drylok
- Installing ceiling fans in the bedrooms
Outdoor lighting over the driveway
I bought a light unit this weekend (9/18) to install over the southeast corner of the house.
- Recovering the greenhouse with new plastic
